Program Description

Event Details

Perched high above Interstate 684 in Bedford, New York, with spectacular views of the hills of Westchester and Putnam Counties, is a viewing platform for counting and identifying thousands of migrating raptors.

Each autumn Bedford Audubon collects scientific data on raptor migration at the Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch, located on a ridge at The Nature Conservancy’s 350-acre Arthur W. Butler Memorial Sanctuary.

For this event, Bedford Audubon’s two professional birding guides will give an overview of the art and science of hawkwatching:

  • Which raptors are in our area and how you identify them.  We’ll review basic identification principals and you will receive helpful ID charts.
  • How to spot the migrating birds and a review of the techniques for counting them.
  • Then we’ll spend our time putting our new knowledge to use!  Binoculars and a spotting telescope will be available.

The platform is a 10-minute walk from the parking lot; wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.
